How to Make Cascarones (Confetti Eggs) for Easter: A Fun Family Craft for Kids
Easter is a time for joy, celebration, and, of course, fun traditions. One popular Easter tradition, especially in Latin American cultures, is the creation of Cascarones—also known as confetti eggs. These colorful, festive eggs are not only an entertaining craft activity for the whole family but also a playful way to celebrate the holiday. Whether you're looking for a new Easter activity or adding a playful twist to your egg hunt, Cascarones will bring a lot of joy and laughter to your home.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to making Cascarones (confetti eggs) with your kids!
What Are Cascarones(Confetti Eggs)?
Cascarones, also known as confetti eggs, are hollowed-out eggs that are filled with colorful confetti or glitter.. The best part? These eggs are meant to be cracked open over your loved ones, showering them with confetti and sparking giggles all around. This fun activity is a beloved Easter tradition in many Latin American cultures, and it’s a fantastic way to get the kids involved in the holiday celebrations.
Materials You’ll Need:
12 eggs (or as many as you want to make)
Optional a pin or small nail (to make holes)
Small confetti (store-bought or homemade)
Glue and tissue paper (for sealing)
Food coloring (optional for dyeing the eggs)
A bowl to catch the egg (if you want to save them for cooking)
Scissors
Newspaper or paper towels (for drying)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Eggs - Two options:
The first option is to blow the egg out using by gently poking a hole at both ends using a pin or small nail (this part is best done by an adult or older child). Then hold the egg over a bowl and gently blow through one of the holes. If your kids are old enough, they can take turns blowing out the contents into a bowl to be used later. You can also show them how to gently tap the egg on the counter to make the holes bigger and help the contents come out.
The second option (this is the method we use!) is to crack just the top of the egg to create a small hole, about an inch big, to pull the egg out of. Here is a video showing you how.
Once the egg is emptied, rinse it with warm water to clean out any egg residue, then let them dry completely on paper towels or newspaper.
2. Decorate the Eggs:
Now, let your kids’ creativity flow! Dye the eggs using food coloring, or let your kids use markers, stickers, or paint to decorate the eggs. This is a great chance for them to get really creative, whether they want to use their favorite colors or make funky patterns!
Let the decorated eggs dry completely before filling them with confetti.
3. Fill the Eggs with Confetti (A Fun Messy Part!):
This is where the excitement starts! Gather your confetti and let the kids pour the confetti into the eggs through the hole in the larger end. You can give them a small spoon to help with filling. Be sure not to overfill the eggs—just enough to make a fun mess when they break open!
4. Seal the Eggs (Easy for Kids to Help):
Now that your eggs are filled, you’ll need to seal the smaller hole. You can use a small piece of tissue paper, a bit of tape, or glue to cover the hole. If you use glue, let it dry completely before handling the eggs.
Make sure the seal is secure enough to keep the confetti inside but not too difficult to break open.
5. Get Ready for the Confetti Fun!
The best part of making Cascarones is cracking them open! Gather the family in a safe, clean area (outside is best for less mess!), and take turns cracking the eggs over each other’s heads. You can also do a confetti egg “battle” where everyone tries to crack each other’s eggs.
The confetti will pour out, creating a burst of color and laughter. Kids will love the surprise of the confetti and the joy of seeing the fun reactions from everyone involved.
Tips for Success:
- Be Gentle: When your kids are blowing out the eggs, make sure they blow gently so the eggs don’t break too early. For younger kids, you can blow out the eggs for them and just let them decorate and fill the eggs. If the hole ends up bigger, it will still be ok! You will just a bigger piece of tissue paper to cover it.
- Confetti Choices: If you want to make your confetti eggs extra special, consider using different types of confetti such as biodegradable options for outdoor events, or themed confetti that fits your party's colors or style. If you don't mind the mess, glitter can be fun too!
- Get Creative with Seals: Let your kids use their imagination to decorate the seals with stickers, ribbon, or colored tape to make the Caserones even more fun.
